Soul Contracts
I believe in life before this life. Call it a preexistence, a previous life, the spirit world, whatever word resonates and serves you best. And I believe that before we chose to incarnate into the physical nature of this body, or possibly long before that, we made a contractual agreement about what we would focus on, experience and learn from this life. In other words, we made a soul contract. What is a soul contract? A soul contract is a chosen path or plan that was co-created by us and our higher power. Before we entered this world we got together with spirit and talked about many things.Things like:What outcomes and lessons do I want to learn from this life? How will I acquire truth and knowledge along my path?Who will assist me with my plan?Who will I assist with their plans? How does my higher power want me to use my gifts and talents for its use?Now if this is your first run in with the idea of soul contracts you might have a few questions. So let me share with you how I came to adopt this spiritual idea and make it my own.I believe that when we adopt the spiritual belief that we are co-creators with our higher power, life stops being so hard. We are free from external circumstances and can no longer blame anyone else for our dysfunction and pain. After I embraced the truth of this belief of being a powerful co-creator, I no longer filled my prayers with discontent and the ever incessant mantra of,"Why me?!"Soul contracts took this empowering belief of being a conscious creator to the next level. When I understood that my higher power and I chose and mapped out the goals of my life, I now could see my trials and heartbreaks for what they really were.Lessons for my growth! When we look at life from the perspective of creating soul contracts we understand that every person that caused us pain was simply fulfilling some role we assigned them. This kind of acceptance facilitates the capability to truly forgive and become stronger from our hardships in a way that brings light and love into our world like never before. But most importantly, we understand that although pain is inevitable for our growth, suffering and a victim-mindset is optional. As an Transformational Life Coach, I love introducing the idea of soul contracts to my clients. It is deeply moving and extremely satisfying to watch someone shift from a powerless mindset to their true vibration of empowered joy after we re-frame a painful piece of their soul contract. The concept of free will or free agency is not thrown out with soul contracts. We can choose to lie dormant on our agreements for as long as we choose. Our higher power will always provide another way for both us and others to fulfill our contracts. But, I can promise that electing to participate in our contracts brings about more peace and spiritual harmony than you can create on your own.So here are some tips for getting your intention in line with your soul contract:
Ask! Through prayer and meditation you can ask to be shown details or areas of your soul contract. I love this prayer from Carol Tuttle's book Remembering Wholeness,
"Dear God, thank you for revealing to my conscious mind what my spiritual agreements and contracts are. I desire to be engaged in them and to create successful outcomes so that I am an instrument in thy hands to bless my life and others'." p.195
Reflect on your most meaningful memories. Try to find where you learned the most valuable lessons and try to find the blessing in disguise. Use journaling and meditation to help aid in the act of forgiveness and releasing pain.
Check out some books that talk about soul contracts. There is an amazing children's book on the topic called The Little Soul and the Sun adapted from Neale Donald Walsch's Conversations with God. I reference it all the time with my kids and when teaching the concept in my classes.
